Core Medical Training: Educational Programmes, Curriculum and Assessment

Who is my supervisor and who is coordinating my training … ?

Dr Jonathan Barratt is Training Programme Director for Core Medical Training in the School

Every Core Medical Training and ACCS trainee (run-through ST1/ST2, core CT1/CT2 and FTSTA) will be allocated an educational supervisor – we currently plan that this supervisor will be the same person for at least 1 year of training (and probably for the whole 2 years for CT1/ST1 trainees)

RCP College Tutors are responsible for coordinating the allocation of educational supervisors on each hospital site

The tutors are:

  • Kettering – Dr Kish Patel
  • Leicester – Dr Reem Al-Jayyousi (LGH); Dr Ravi Pathmanathan (GGH); Drs Miles Levy / Adrian Stanley (LRI)
  • Northampton – Dr Patrick Davey

The RCP Tutor arranged an induction meeting on each site within the first few days of your post, and is the person who should be able to confirm/allocate the name of your educational supervisor

Where I know them, the name of your educational supervisor in each post is also already recorded within your e-Portfolio

It is the trainee’s responsibility to meet with their educational supervisor as soon as possible for initial appraisal and agreement of PDP

What educational opportunities are available … ?

·         Details of monthly CMT Education sessions 2009/10

·         Recent example programme (Nephrology session)

  • Details of educational opportunities for CMT on all sites will be posted here as soon as possible
  • In the meantime the RCP Tutors should outline opportunities on your site at the induction meeting

What competencies do I need to achieve …  ?

  • Curricula have been developed by the College and approved by PMETB.

·         CMT Trainees appointed from August 2009 onwards follow the CMT section of the 2009 GIM curriculum:

·         CMT Trainees appointed in 2007 and 2008 follow the 2007Generic and Acute Medicine Level 1 Curriculum

·         Generic Curriculum

·         Acute Medicine Level 1 Curriculum

·         The ACCS Curriculum is currently being revised – the 2007 curriculum applies to current trainees:

·         2007 ACCS Curriculum

  • ACCS trainees should note that they need to achieve the Level 1 Acute Medicine competencies by the end of CT2, in addition to additional anaesthetic and ITU-based competencies.
  • A pragmatic local specification of requirements is available via this link …

·         ACCS Curriculum Assessment – Acute Medicine

·         … this is designed to indicate minimum requirements for all ACCS trainees at the end of their 6 months Acute Medicine attachment – but please note that Acute Medicine ACCS trainees need to complete all the Acute Medical Level 1 competencies by the end of their 2 years training and all CMT competencies from the 2009 curriculum by the end of their optional 3rd year of Core training.

  • RCP have provided the following grid to assess satisfactory progress in achieving competencies …

·         2009 Curriculum ARCP Decision Aid

·         2007 Curriculum ARCP Decision Aid

How will I record evidence for my competencies and record details of my appraisals and assessments … ?

  • Assessments and Appraisals will all be recorded in the “e-Portfolio”
  • This is a really useful web-based application which actually works!
  • It includes context-related links to relevant sections of the Curricula which are much more readable and digestible than the entire curriculum documents above
  • All East Midlands (South) CT and ST trainees in Medicine now have an e-Portfolio account and we rely almost entirely on the data stored in the e-Portfolio when deciding on ARCP outcomes
  • Guidance of e-Portfolio content for ARCP (not yet updated for ePortfolio v2 – but principles remain the same)
  • Minimum data requirements for ARCP (not yet updated for ePortfolio v2 – but principles remain the same)

  • A link to the e-Portfolio website:

Other useful information relating to use of e-Portfolio:

·         Link to RCP e-Portfolio user guides for Trainee and Educational Supervisor

Specialty Training (ST3+ trainees)

·         Specialty Trainees at ST3+ should all now have access to the ePortfolio. If you do not have an account please contact the School’s coordinator.

·         ePortfolio minimum standards for ST3+ trainees

·         ST3+ trainees appointed after August 2007 should have had an ARCP for each year of training (or have one planned in the near future). They should therefore have an “ARCP Outcome Form” (see Gold Guide Appendix 5). If you have not had an ARCP or not received a copy of this form (which is equivalent to, but different from, the old RITA form) then please discuss with your TPD and inform the School’s Coordinator

Specialist Registrar Training

·         Specialist Registrars continue to train under the old curriculum and using the old JCHMT/JRCPTB paper log-books.

·         SpR’s however are part of the School – and I am happy to consider giving access to the ePortfolio if any trainees would prefer this as a method to collect workplace assessments and undertake MSF.

ACCS: Curriculum and Assessment for Anaesthetic and EM Trainees

“ACCS – Acute Medicine” trainees need to maintain a JRCPTB e-Portfolio and document the same competencies as Core Medical Trainees.

However, ACCS trainees in Anaesthesia and Emergency Medicine also need to document their competencies on their Acute Medicine attachments, whilst using their own Colleges’ documentation for the educational portfolio.

The following documents explain our approach to this in East Midlands South:

  • ACAT – Word Form (best to R click and ‘Save Target as’ – then open from local disc/server)

There is a lot more information on ACCS available on the ACCS UK Website

Please Note - before you use this site:

This site remains a work in progress:

  • At a time of constant change in the NHS, Clinical Programme Descriptions continue to be updated; versions presented here are the latest available
  • A few ST3+ Sub-Speciality Training Descriptions are currently simply based on the existing SpR Training Programme Descriptions
  • The site has been produced by the Head for the Specialty School of Medicine (TAH) for information for trainees and trainers and is not an official Deanery or Trust publication in terms of employment law. However, I am involved in all key decisions relating to Medicine Speciality Training in the Deanery and have made my best efforts to ensure that it is as up to date and accurate as possible. All programme descriptions for vacancies from 2007 onwards have been updated by the TPD and checked by UHL Human Resources Dept
  • The rudimentary web-page layout is designed to allow us to get up-to-date information widely available as soon as possible – refinements in design may follow later
